Free Secure File Eraser is a tool that can erase files in such a way that they cannot be recovered.
Using various wiping methods, such as Gutmann (35-passes), DoD-7pass and DoD-3pass, files can be overwritten and made unrecoverable even for experts.
Files deleted in Windows do not actually get wiped from the disk. They can instead be overwritten by new files, meaning that file recovery is very easy.
